Dear New York,
Save me a little December.
Not the perfectly arranged, snow-covered version from the movies. The real one. The loud one. The one that never quite slows down, even when the temperature drops.
The one where your hands disappear into your coat pockets and the steam rises from the street. Where yellow taxis blur past glowing windows and every corner seems to have somewhere important to be.
Save me the smell of fresh bagels in the morning. The warmth of a paper coffee cup. The sound of subway trains arriving, footsteps rushing, and somebody calling out an order behind a deli counter.
Save me the little bookstores where you forget what time it is. The brownstone stoops dressed in evergreen branches. Washington Square Park on a cold afternoon, when the trees are bare and the city feels a little more like itself.
And the Christmas windows. The lights along Fifth Avenue. The Rockefeller Center tree. Not because everything needs to sparkle, but because New York has a wonderful way of making an ordinary walk feel like an occasion.
Save me one long walk through the West Village. One slice of pizza I definitely didn't need. One quiet moment in Bryant Park. And that strange, beautiful feeling of being surrounded by millions of lives while somehow finding a little corner that feels like yours.
I don't need the perfect New York. I don't need every rooftop, every museum, or every famous view. Just a few hours. A warm bagel. A street worth remembering. And the skyline reminding me that there's always something more around the corner.
So, dear New York, keep a little December for me.
I'll bring the scarf. You bring the magic.
Love,Someone who still thinks about you every time the city lights come on.
